If there is one thing everyone wants in life, it is to enjoy and to be truly happy. Some people think that happiness and enjoyment in life come from having nice things and lots of money. However, millionaires aren’t truly happy and do not enjoy every minute of their lives. On the other side of the coin, not every poor person is depressed and lives a life of despair.

Money, upbringing, and your physical environment do not dictate how much you enjoy your life. Actually, it might be true what they say: most aspects of enjoying your life are free.

Here are some free things you can start doing today to truly begin enjoying your life:

  1. Gratitude.

    The first thing you can do to start enjoying your life is to be truly grateful for the things you do have. There are many things, especially in Western society, that most people take for granted. Start by being thankful for your health, your family and friends, clean running water, and the roof over your head. Many people would be truly content with just these things. Take 5 or 10 minutes each day to write or speak out loud everything you are grateful for. It’s surprising how quickly you’ll start enjoying more aspects of your life.

  2. Set goals.

    A big part of life is about doing the things you love. Many people make excuses for why they can’t do something. Don’t be that person. Start working out how you could do it. As the great military commander Hannibal once said, “I will either find a way, or make one”. Take out a pen and paper and write out everything you still want to do with your life. Write your list without thinking what other people will say. While writing continue to ask yourself, “What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail”.

    Setting goals is a great way to bring more enjoyment into your life. Even if you don’t reach the destination of your goal, you will have one hell of a journey.

  3. Step outside your comfort zone.

    So many people are afraid to step outside their comfort zone. They are afraid of looking stupid or failing. Anyone who is truly successful and happy has failed countless times. As long as you learn from your failures, they aren’t failures at all. Your confidence will begin to grow once you start stepping outside your comfort zone, and this in turn will lead to even more enjoyment.

  4. Start saying “yes” more.

    In this day and age, it is so easy to make an excuse for not doing something. Learning to say “yes” more is one of the best ways to bring more enjoyment into your life. When you say yes, opportunities and adventures begin to open up. You don’t need to say yes to everything, but in the future consider saying yes to something you would normally say no to.

  5. Lend a helping hand.

    Helping others is one of the best ways to enjoy your life and be happy. What may seem like nothing more than a few minutes of your time could make all the difference to someone else’s life. Knowing that your actions have caused someone else to raise a smile is one of the best feelings in the world.

  6. Pause and reflect.

    When everyone else is running around at a hundred miles and hour, take a deep breath and just stop. Stop and look at the world. Learn to see the beauty in everything – because it’s there, you just need to look hard enough.
